Essay about Feminism - 1510 Words
Feminism There has been a great deal of discussion over the Feminist Gender Studies Program changing its name to Gender Sexuality. The basis of this debate is over the exclusion of the word feminist from the title. It is important to question how this modification will affect the direction of the program and the feminist movement as a whole. The categorization of this area of study must be sensitive to the complex social issues it represents. Bringing the term gender to the fore-front, and focusing less on women, is a necessary part of the attempt by contemporary feminists to stake claim to a certain definitional ground, to insist on the inadequacies of existing bodies of men (Scott, 166). This new spotlight on gender andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Men may not want to be identified as a feminist, and students who question their own gender may not think this movement really relates to their lives. This leaves a large population of the student body feeling outside the borders of the femini sm, which directly relates to their lack of participation of the movement outside of the classroom. On the surface, the exclusion of the term from the departments name is an effort to invite a more diverse group of students into the program. This change in the title also represents a change in feminism, one that seeks to focus less on women and more broadly on gender. The history of feminists challenging the constructed norm for women has pushed the movement itself to the outside of society. It is crucial for the movement to retreat from the outside by being more inclusive of all the players in society, including men. Fuss asked the important question, does one compromise oneself by working on the inside, or does one shortchange oneself by holding tenaciously to the outside? (Fuss, 237) It is evident by where women stand in society today that feminists are only shortchanging the movement by excluding the rest of society by focusing on women and pushing everyone else outside. Women do not exist alone in society, and in order to change it there must be more factors included into the equation than just women. The retreat of women back into the home after feminism started shows that the role of women cannotShow MoreRelatedFeminism : A Studies Of Feminism1559 Words à |à 7 PagesFeminism 6 Running Head: PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES:A STUDIES OF FEMINISM PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES: A STUDIES OF FEMINISM CUIYI P. Night To Remember Essays - English-language Films, Canada
Night To Remember A Night To Remember by Walter Lord is about the well known disaster that the luxury cruse ship the "Titanic" went thorough. This story takes place on the ship and on its many decks. During the story the Titanic sails along the Atlantic Ocean. Walter Lord wrote this book in 1955, but the famous collision occurred on April 14, 1912 at 11:40 P.M. In this novel the author, Walter Lord wants to show what happened at every moment on the cruse liner. The Novel also has not one main character, that is, all characters have the same value in the story. On April 14, 1912, 2:00 P.M. was when the Titanic left Queenstown for New York on the huge Voyage carrying 1316 passengers and 891 crew. All was calm cruising along the Atlantic at 221/2 knots and the ocean looked like a sheet of ice. The watchman in the crows nest accounted for an iceberg but since the ship was unsinkable there was no need to worry right? All was calm on the ship as well some were playing cards, looking out at the night sky, listening to the band play, and some people decided to sleep. Until that "grinding" noise came, at around 11:40 that night some people heard a grinding noise that seemed to be coming from the inside of the ship. All but a few cared about it - if they even heard it. The ship's reputation would hold up to some grinding noise any day. So after a while the word got around that they had, in fact, stuck an iceberg. Surprisingly no one cared and everyone went back to bed. The captain of the Titanic could if in emergency hit a electric button and many air-tight doors sealed off special rooms that could keep the ship afloat even if it had a hole in its double reinforced hull. As word soon spread that the collision was a lot worse than before expected, the captain and the crew members went to go check the damage. The blow caused a two foot gash in the side of boiler room number 5. The people had to get into the emergency row boats right? Wrong! The Titanic only had enough row boats for a fraction of the passengers. So the only likely thing to do was to make the women and children go first then if there was any other room left (which there couldn't be) the men could go on. The calls came from all around shouting "Women and children on the emergency row boats." That really startled the people on the ship. They wanted to know why they had to go on the emergency boats if the ship was unsinkable. But if they had to... they would. People went back in their rooms and they took things that were most valuable to them. One person took a Bible that was given to him by his brother. But almost all of the people (in the upper class) took jewelry and money. At 12:15 A.M. the next day, the first wireless call for help was made. The water was getting higher and higher. The departing said their final good-byes. Soon the Titanic would be under the great Atlantic Ocean. So they would have to act fast. But they were also were ready to go down by the ship. The ship was taking on more and more water, faster and faster. Some people panicked and jumped over the edge thinking that they could swim for their lives. But the water was so cold that they died quickly. The ship was now on such a tilt that it was no longer easy to stand. People were tumbling left and right. People were also going crazy because they either saw their spouse or friend drown in front of them. As the Titanic was in its final stages of being above the sea, some accounted that the huge ship looked like a gigantic jagged rock sticking out of the water. No one could save the Titanic now the only hope was to save the people who got off the ship with the help of the ship Carpathia who dropped the lines out to save those in the life boats. Back home Newspapers read that all were saved from the massive collision. But that was far from the truth. There was only about 705 survivors. The Titanic was the single most popular ship in History that was noticed as one of the worst

Akindele Owolabi Essays - Gender, Violence Against Women
Akindele Owolabi Essays - Gender, Violence Against Women Akindele Owolabi Men's Health James Bridges Jr November 27, 2016 Sexual Violence and Victimization on College Campuses Sexual violence is a serious problem that can have lasting, harmful effects on victims, their families, friends, and communities. Sexual violence and victimization on college campuses needs to be eradicated. Speaking as a college student out here in a world where everyday there is rape, murder or abuse I can personally tell you that I am afraid. I have to be cautious when walking alone in the night, and constantly have to be looking around to make sure that my surroundings are clear. I know that I am a male and that is less likely, based off of percentages and surveys taken, that I will be raped but you still have to be cautious. In order to reduce interpersonal and partner violence we must first look at prevention. Prevention efforts should ultimately decrease the number of individuals who perpetrate sexual violence and the number of individuals who are victims. Many prevention approaches aim to reduce risk factors and promote protective factors for sexual violence. In addition, comprehensive prevention strategies should address factors at each of the levels that influence sexual violenceindividual, relationship, community, and society. The most common prevention strategies currently focus on the victim, the perpetrator, or bystanders. Strategies that try to equip the victim with knowledge, awareness, or self-defense skills are referred to as "risk reduction techniques." Strategies focused on the perpetrator attempt to change risk and protective factors for sexual violence to reduce the likelihood that an individual will engage in sexually violent behavior. The goal of bystander prevention strategies is to change social norms supporting sexual violence and empower men and women to intervene with peers to prevent an assault from occurring. Other prevention strategies address social norms, policies, or laws in communities to reduce the perpetration of sexual violence across the population. Some steps are; Know the signs Educate the students - have conferences on interpersonal and relationship violence Check in regularly - if you have a friend who you know may be in a bad situation in her relationship, call or text jus to see how she is doing Be on standby - if you have a friend or friends who may have told you they aren't completely comfortable in their relationship be the person they can call or text whenever As it relates to the question, "Is there an emphasis on Sexual or Partner violence on Historically Black Colleges and Universities?" I don't think there is one. To me there is an emphasis on sexual or partner violence on all women but particularly those in the later stages of high school going into college and those in college. This has been that way since I was young, but as I have grown and matured in this world, I have seen more children being abused or raped, even abducted, so it is hard to actually tell if there is even an actual age group preference. I believe that "these monsters" (rapists, abusers and abductors) don't care what gender or how old those they harm are. So to me there is no emphasis on HBCU's in general but an emphasis on all women, I know I didn't mention much about the men and that's because it is rare to hear that men have been raped or abused because based on past percentages and statistics it is usually the men who do these horrible crimes. But recently ther e has been more abductions of boys and that is something to note. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) against women is now recognized as a problem of global magnitude, owing to its detrimental consequences on the health, social and economic welfare of women and their children. It is a life-threatening problem primarily affecting women and girls. Exposure to IPV among women has been associated with increased morbidity and is documented as the third leading cause of mortality among women of reproductive age. IPV often has serious long-term consequences for the individuals involved, their families, communities, and society. IPV is not restricted to married couples, but also occurs among people in courtship and dating relationships. The phenomenon cuts across all age, social and economic constellations. However young women particularly college students experience high levels of IPV
